  • The Brussels Infants and Toddlers Stool Scale (BITSS) is used to look at the change in consistency of your baby’s poo when below 1 year of age.
  • Poo changes (appearance or consistency) should only be considered if they have persisted for 1 week or more, without any other obvious cause, including infection.

Once completed, this chart should be reviewed by your baby’s healthcare professional.

Poo

Poo consistency can vary day to day, here is what to expect.

  • Every baby has his/her own pooing pattern; and it is very common for a baby to occasionally have hard or soft poo.
  • For example, some breastfed babies may only have one bowel movement a week and may always pass loose poo.
  • In addition, be aware that during the first few months of life (0-3 months or newborn stage), babies can also have many poos in a day – up to 8 times/day has been reported, often yellowish in colour and thick like peanut butter. This is perfectly normal and also will change when you start your baby on solid foods!
